Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) for the .EU name space.

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Starting 10 December 2009, companies and individuals will be able to register IDN.eu domains, Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) for the .EU name space.

IDNs are domain names that contain non-ASCII characters. These characters include, for example, the Swedish å, the German ü, the Romanian &#537 and characters from the Bulgarian and Greek alphabets as a whole. IDNs are particularly important for .eu as the European Union has 27 Member States and 23 official languages. Many of these languages have non-ASCII characters in their alphabets.

Please note that you will not be able to register or perform an availability check for .EU IDNs prior to 10 December. Additionally, the .EU registry, EURID, will not be holding a trademark sunrise period so all IDN.EU’s will be registered on a first come, first served basis on 10 December.

To find out exactly which non-ASCII characters will be supported by .eu, see our supported character list. There are also some technical limitations which apply to IDNs. Please contact us for more of these rules.  It is important to note that the .EU extension requires registrants to meet local nexus requirements, if your company does not meet the local requirements WSI offers Local Contact service that can be added to the registration.

Legal statement

The IDN checker allows you to see if a specific Internationalised Domain Name (IDN) is valid. A valid IDN is a name that does not violate the technical limitations for IDNs.
To see if a valid IDN is available for registration, you must search the .eu WHOIS database.

Please note, the IDN checker is provided for information purposes only. EURid cannot, under any circumstances, be held liable should the IDN checker prove to be wrong, incomplete or inaccurate in any sense.
