Facebook Shuts Down Lite Site and Pakistan Lifts Ban

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Facebook has shut down its Lite site witch was aimed at those on slow internet connections.

The site was set up last September and was notable for removing much of the clutter – including apps and chat – that many believe has become the bane of the social network. Instead users were presented with a series of wall posts for friends, leading to immediate comparisons with twitter.

However, a brief message on Facebook’s own fan page revealed the company was shutting down the site. “Thanks to everyone who tried out Facebook Lite we’re no longer supporting it, but learning a lot from the teat of a slimmed-down site. If you used Lite, you’ll now be taken to the main Facebook.com site.”

We felt that the changes that were made to the main site improved the performance of the site and therefore made the Lite site unnecessary. This would also cut down on the Facebook experience of the site as a whole.

In other Facebook news, Facebook is now available in Pakistan after the ban was lifted.

Pakistan lifted the Facebook ban on Monday after Facebook officials apologized for offensive content and removed it from the site only of you go to the site from Pakistan.

Recently a Pakistani court had ordered the authorities to block Facebook due to a contest that called for caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

“The government has assured the court on behalf of the website that the blasphemous material would not seen in Pakistan,” lawyer Azhar Siddique told Reuters. Siddique is a representative of the Islamic Lawyers Forum, a group whose petition called for the Facebook ban.

On Sunday, Bangladesh, another majority Muslim country, also blocked access to Facebook over “objectionable” material about the Prophet Mohammad.
